Dissertation characters

But in a novel, the major support of the old view/new view relationship in the story is the use of foils. A foil is a character in a story who serves as a contrast to another character. Often, the contrast is with the main character or one of the other primary Dissertation characters. And the contrast serves to highlight specific traits of the other character that reinforce the old view/new view relationship. Foils are major factors in novels because they take much longer to develop, and short stories just don't have the space or time to develop them.
